Be Seen. Be Safe. Why does High-Visibility matter?

Bb

By lighting ourselves and our animals up on the road, we believe it gives motorists a greater opportunity to see us, and in turn, make an informed decision around approaching and passing vulnerable road users safely.

Wearing high vis with the Pass Wide and Slow road safety message helps to share this positive “crisp clean message” in the community.   Chair Julia McLean listened to support from politicians for the road safety message whilst delivering to Parliament’s Select Committee.  It coincided with positive feedback from the walking and cycling community, and NZ Police had endorsed the road safety message with Julia McLean nine months prior.

The Trust is designing High Vis gear that can be worn proudly by Vulnerable Road Users across Aotearoa New Zealand and wishes to be responsive to users' wants and needs.  If you have an idea or particular request, please get in touch.

Horse High Vis Quarter attachment – this reflective strapping attaches to the saddle and is visible to motorists when approaching from behind.  The Trust wishes to thank Jan Parson in the UK who encouraged Julia to make them for the New Zealand equestrian community.  The NZVRU Trust is thrilled to be in a position to do this.  Thank you Jan for your support for improved road safety across the globe.

Reflective Boots – it’s important to have some form of visibility on a horse’s legs.  Movement and visibility is critical to Be Seen and drivers that we have spoken to express appreciation for every measure riders and carriage drivers take to do this.

Helmet – a reflective strap around the helmet has proved to be a success by way of feedback from motorists.  It’s visible from afar and the height of the rider in view of a motorist, increases your chance of being seen.  These straps can also be secured around your angle for another cost effective measure, and this can work for cyclists too.

The Trust is also making high vis branded helmet covers for both cyclists and equestrians.

Chest Harness- created for riders and motorcyclists who perhaps would like an alternative to a vis vest.  These can be adjusted and made for a child or adult.

Dogs - our four legged friends deserve to Be Seen and we have a range of ways you can do this including reflective collars (with an optional light.

A reflective harness and dog lead is another way in which your pets - big or small - can be seen whilst out with you on the road.

Float signs - an effective way to support the Pass Wide and Slow message and promote safer driver behaviours around horse floats on the roads too.

Banners - the Trust supports the international Pass Wide and Slow awareness ride campaign in September and is offering promotional banners to spread the word.
