Pass Wide and Slow
CALLING ALL DRIVERS IN NEW ZEALAND
When you see a pedestrian, cyclist or horse on the road, any vulnerable road user, please exercise patience by slowing down and giving space as you pass.
The NZVRU Trust, with the support of New Zealand Police is committed to reducing trauma, serious injury and death on our roads, and together are promoting a positive and life-saving message - Pass WIDE and SLOW.
WHO IS A VRU?
A vulnerable road user is anyone not enclosed in a motor vehicle and therefore at greater risk of injury or fatality in a collision.
Examples include:
Pedestrians (children, elderly, disabled people)
Cyclists
Horse riders and carriage drivers
Mobility device users (scooters or wheelchairs)
Highway or road workers performing maintenance or construction
ROAD SAFETY IS A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
Vulnerable road users have no protection and are dependent on the choices made by the drivers around them.
Everyone is a vulnerable road user at some point in their life and most people drive too. Approach and pass a person on the road how you would wish to be passed if it was you or your loved one on foot, two wheels or riding an animal.
